In Elders quorum we were asked to define happiness and how it related to having children. I defined happiness in class as the result of living after Godliness. In other words, the degree of happiness we experience in life is proportional to the degree of Godliness we have achieved in life. How children factor in is that they are integrated into God's perfect plan of happiness. Consequently, when we live our life in such a way that we conform to God's perfect plan of happiness, the degree of happiness we experience in life increases. While the world would have us believe that the financial, emotional, and temporal price tag that children carry with them overwhelms any potential payoff, such reasoning is not founded upon God's perfect knowledge or truth. Therefore, in spite of all of the seeming cons associated with a couple's decision to have children, by faithfully conforming to God's plan and bringing children into the world we open ourselves up to a degree of happiness that was previously unknown and inaccessible to us.

Right on, baby! You don't know anything about love until you have a child. It's a whole new world. Of course, as you try to parent, you learn that kids have a masterful way of decreasing your godliness. Hang in there. There's a reason He's called Heavenly FATHER instead of Heavenly Man. New lessons come daily and it is our job to keep trying, never comparing ourselves with perfection.
Nice food for thought. Your mom's insight about heavenly father vs. heavenly man occasioned a grin, but also some serious reflection.
